CBD is one of the over 100 compounds extracted from the cannabis plant, the same plant where the intoxicating marijuana is derived from. What differentiates marijuana from CBD is the high level of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).
THC is the psychoactive compound in marijuana and other cannabis plants that causes the intoxicating or euphoric effect in smokers. Pure CBD does not have THC. As a result, CBD can be used to derive all the health benefits contained in cannabis without the risk of the psychoactive effect caused by THC.
From recent studies, CBD oil has proven to be very effective in treating chronic health diseases. Research has also shown that this oil can be used for issues ranging from stress, anxiety, and depression. However, there is no viable result in the use of CBD on Alzheimer’s. So far what we have is the effect of CBD on Alzheimer related diseases.
What is Alzheimer’s disease?
Alzheimer’s is the most popular form of dementia disease. It is caused by the buildup of a protein called plague and fiber bundles in the brain. When this happens, it blocks the processing of the neural networks, thereby causing a gradual decline in the performance of the nervous system. This is why Alzheimer patients suffer temporary memory loss which worsens with time. The major symptom of this disease include
- Mood swing
- Anxiety disorder
- A gradual decrease in the ability to hold a sensible conversation and so on
Can CBD cure Alzheimer’s disease?
In June 2016, a study was carried out by the Salk Institute of Biological Studies on the effect of CBD on Alzheimer’s. The result shows that CBD has the ability to cure plague forming proteins, the major cause of Alzheimer’s disease.
For the research, CBD oil was administered to some mice with the behavioral characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease. The oil doesn’t only regulate the mice’s behavior but also reduced the accumulation of amyloid in the mice’s brain. This result led medical researchers into more investigation on the effectiveness of CBD oil on Alzheimer’s and other related diseases.
The result so far shows that there is a relationship between CBD oil and Alzheimer’s diseases. But, no thorough research has been carried out on humans to back up the claim.
However, CBD has performed very well on patients suffering from diseases related to Alzheimer’s like anxiety, agitation, stress and so on. CBD oil works effectively for any of these diseases.
Therefore, we can conclude by saying, since CBD works on Alzheimer related diseases, there is every likelihood that it would do the same when used on a patient suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. In administering CBD to an Alzheimer patient, the age and weight of the patient should be taken into consideration. The duration of the disease is also very important.
Anyone interested in using CBD oil to treat Alzheimer’s disease should first see a doctor. The doctor would determine the right dosage to use for the disease and how long it should be used before getting the desired results.
